Early that afternoon, the hearings resumed.

People continued their march to the microphone, championing their leader. Allen was beckoned offstage. A minute passed; then two. The crowd stirred. Allen emerged and informed the school board that he had been subpoenaed by the state police. The stakes had been raised. A criminal investigation was now under way; they had a warrant to search his car and apartment. So Allen and a hundred of his followers headed for his home at the Napier Manor Apartments, a modest row of three-story apartment buildings.

While state troopers rummaged through Allen’s apartment and car, the parents and ministers gathered by the stairwell, praying and chanting. What particularly infuriated them that afternoon was the discovery that Dan Ertman’s name appeared on the subpoenas, suggesting that he had initiated the investigation. He denied it. He said the state police had got in touch with him, wanting to know where Allen kept his expense receipts.
